MORE THAN A SHOP

LDS IS A RETAIL UPSKILLER

Suitability

There are different types of learning disability, which can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. In all cases a learning disability is lifelong.

It can be difficult to diagnose a mild learning disability as the individual will often mix well with others and will be able to cope with many everyday tasks. However, they may need support in other areas of their life. Everyone is different, however, people in the mild to moderate range may benefit from joining LDS as a staff member. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old and capable of following simple instructions.

Some individuals who experience learning difficulties can be incredibly loyal and dedicated employees within a regular work setting. While they undergo training and accumulate valuable experience in the ‘Learning Difficulty Support’ retail unit they will be carefully evaluated for their potential to transition into full-time salaried positions.

Many local retailers are genuinely willing to support our important drive to help individuals who face challenges due to a learning difficulty. However, we must remember that Learning Difficulty Support (LDS) is a charity, while local businesses are primarily for-profit entities. With that understanding in mind, we strive to establish a win-win partnership that benefits both the charitable mission and the shops in our community.
